I'm currently taking a class on facilitating live events and had the opportunity to attend and review my first webinars. Here is my review:
1. Title of the webinar:
“Feelings Count: Using Movies to Link Learning”
2. Date, start and end time of the webinar:
Tuesday, January 23, 2018 9:00 – 10:00AM Pacific
3. Number of participants who attended this webinar:
253 attended live with 1,400 registered total
4. URL of the webinar announcement or description:
5. Information about how to review the recording of the webinar, if available:
Not sure. Probably on website.
6. Name(s) of webinar presenters:
Becky Pike Pluth, President and CEO, The Bob Pike Group
7. Summarize the major topics addressed in this webinar:
Recognize how emotions affect learning
Discover tips for determining the right emotion and selecting the best scene that taps into that emotion
Explore tactics for making the most out of the movie scene and managing the scene for optimal learning and discussion
Learn how to easily and legally select and use movies that teach and train
8. Describe the way in which this webinar included active learning strategies:
They opened with a contest to win training games in HTML5. There are clickable links throughout this presentation (to handout and to widget and to movie clips to watch and report back on). Pretty interactive with the chat feature too. More than I expected!
9. What is your assessment of the energy level and tone of voice of the presenter(s)? Were they excited and enthusiastic about the topic? Were they easy to listen to?
The person who did the intro had a good microphone, clear and upbeat voice.
The main speaker was also high energy.
10. What did you think about their slides/graphics? Were they easy to read? Did your eyes get tired? Describe how they addressed or did not address CARP? What would you change?
They spent a lot of time advertising future events which was boring (8 minutes)
Contrast – most slides were black with white letters or the opposite
Alignment – slides were aligned
Repetition – slide colors changed and were not consistent
Proximity – similar items weren’t grouped together
My eyes got tired when a word scramble was used and everyone was writing on it. Made interacting difficult.
11. What did you think about their microphone and lighting skills? What worked and what would you change?
The main speaker, Becky Pluth, started talking and had to clear her throat a lot which was a bit distracting. Her speaker was also a little distorted and she’s loud. The moderator instructed the audience to adjust speaker and to have Becky move back from the microphone.
12. What aspects of this webinar might you want to duplicate in the webinars you develop in this course, i.e., the team project? What aspects do you want to avoid? Other lessons learned, reflections, inspirations etc.
I don’t like all the advertisements and prize options for their products.
Can use circle tools or chat to comment on photos and their differences.
I like the poll and the response via chat because it felt conversational. I liked that the speaker read comments out loud as they came in.
She showed a clip from a movie after a family member dies in the hospital as an example of showing negative things will turn off audience and decrease learning. That was definitely the case for me as I just lost a family member and the scene turned me off.
They never taught about how to get permission to use movies in teaching which seems essential. However she linked out to: http://www.copyright.com/crc/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2016/06/List-MPL-Producers.pdf
Several asked about completion certificate and nobody replied.
13. When you submit this assignment, include a copy of any handouts, job aids, or other documentation you received as a participant in this webinar. Were these handouts helpful? If there were no handouts, would you have liked to have one? Why?
The handout (attached) was referenced but not actively ready by me during the presentation since it was also on the slides. Seemed irrelevant other than printing if needed later.
14. Additional comments, compliments, criticisms:
This was my first webinar so I didn’t really know what to expect. I think I could do another and be engaged but I did it at work with my office door shut and still got interrupted a few times so doing it away from other obligations seems essential.
